Description
Bottle gourd, commonly known as lauki, pani lao, or sorakaya, is a light green, bottle-shaped vegetable known for its high water content and cooling effect. Its skin is smooth and tender when young, and the inner flesh is soft, spongy, and mildly flavored. Popular across Indian households, bottle gourd is prized for its digestibility, hydrating properties, and versatility in cooking. It is especially favored during hot weather and in light, health-focused diets.
Growing Method
Bottle gourd is a fast-growing vine cultivated in warm, sunny climates. It grows well in fertile, well-drained loamy soil rich in organic matter. It is usually propagated through seeds and requires trellising or support for vine growth. Regular watering, weeding, and pest control help ensure healthy development. The gourd is typically harvested within 60–80 days of planting, when the fruit is still tender and before the seeds harden.
Nutritional Value
Bottle gourd is over 90% water and very low in calories, making it excellent for hydration and weight loss. It is a good source of dietary fiber, vitamin C, B-complex vitamins, calcium, magnesium, and potassium. Its soothing and alkaline nature supports digestive health, regulates blood pressure, and helps in detoxifying the body. It is often recommended for people with acidity, diabetes, or liver issues.
Culinary Use
Bottle gourd is used in a variety of Indian dishes, such as curries, dals, soups, koftas, and stir-fries. It is often cooked with mild spices, combined with lentils like moong dal, or used to make stuffed preparations. In some regions, it is grated and used in desserts like lauki halwa or lauki kheer. Due to its neutral taste, it absorbs flavors well and is often used in satvik or fasting meals.
Storage & Care
Store bottle gourd in the refrigerator, preferably in a perforated bag, where it stays fresh for 4–6 days. Choose firm, unblemished gourds with smooth skin. Avoid overripe or yellowing ones, as they tend to have hard seeds and fibrous texture. Wash only before cooking, and if needed, peeled and chopped pieces can be stored in an airtight container for a day.
