Description

Description
Radish, commonly known as Mula in Hindi, is a crisp, root vegetable with a sharp, peppery flavor. The edible part is typically a swollen taproot, which can be white, red, pink, purple, or even black, depending on the variety. Radishes vary in shape and size, from small and round to long and cylindrical. The outer skin can be smooth or slightly rough, while the interior is firm, crunchy, and juicy. Radishes are widely used in salads, pickles, stir-fries, and garnishes for their fresh, tangy taste and crisp texture.

Growing Method
Radish grows best in cool climates with well-drained, fertile soil rich in organic matter and a pH of 6.0–7.0. It is usually grown from seeds sown directly in the field or garden. Radish requires consistent watering to prevent the roots from becoming woody or splitting. They grow quickly, often maturing in 20–70 days depending on the variety. Radishes need full sunlight but can tolerate partial shade. Regular weeding and pest control, particularly against aphids and root maggots, ensure healthy growth. Radishes are harvested when roots reach the desired size and firmness.

Nutritional Value
Radishes are low in calories but rich in nutrients. They are an excellent source of vitamin C, potassium, and fiber. Radishes also contain antioxidants such as catechin, pyrogallol, and other flavonoids that help combat oxidative stress. The high water content aids in hydration, and the fiber promotes healthy digestion. Radishes are naturally low in sugar, making them suitable for diabetic diets. Additionally, certain compounds in radish are known to support liver function and boost immunity.

Culinary Use
Radishes can be eaten raw or cooked. Raw radishes are commonly sliced or grated into salads, sandwiches, and slaws, offering a crisp, peppery bite. Cooked radishes become tender and slightly sweet, making them suitable for stir-fries, soups, and roasted vegetable dishes. Both the root and the green tops are edible; the greens can be sautéed or added to soups and stews. Radishes pair well with salt, lemon, yogurt, herbs, and spices and are popular in Indian, Japanese, and European cuisines.

Storage and Care
Radishes should be stored in a cool, moist environment, ideally in the refrigerator crisper drawer. When properly stored, they last 1–2 weeks. The leafy tops should be removed before storage to prevent wilting. Radishes should not be left at room temperature for long periods, as they can become soft and lose their crispness. Avoid washing radishes until ready to use, as excess moisture can promote spoilage.
