Description
Rocket flower (Eruca vesicaria), also known as arugula flower or rucola flower, is the small, delicate bloom of the arugula plant. The flowers are white or pale yellow with purple or dark veins and have four petals arranged in a cross shape. They have a mildly peppery, nutty, and slightly sweet taste that reflects the flavor of arugula leaves. These edible flowers are often used to add visual appeal and a subtle spicy aroma to salads, garnishes, and gourmet dishes.
Growing Method
Rocket plants grow best in cool to warm climates with well-drained, fertile soil and a pH between 6.0 and 7.0. They prefer full sunlight but can tolerate partial shade. Regular watering is important to keep the plants healthy and encourage flowering. Flowers usually appear 4–6 weeks after sowing, once the plant starts to bolt. To maintain continuous growth and flowering, harvesting leaves regularly and pruning are recommended. Rocket is usually grown from seeds in garden beds or pots.
Nutritional Value
Rocket flowers are low in calories and rich in vitamins A, C, and K, along with minerals like calcium and potassium. They contain antioxidants, flavonoids, and glucosinolates, which help support immunity, digestion, and overall health. Their light, nutritious nature makes them a good addition to a healthy diet.
Culinary Use
Rocket flowers are edible and used mainly as a garnish or flavor enhancer. They add a mild peppery note and attractive color to salads, pasta, risottos, pizzas, and sandwiches. Chefs also use them to decorate soups and appetizer platters or pair them with cheese, citrus, and balsamic dressings. The flowers can also be infused in oils or vinegars for a light, aromatic flavor.
Storage and Care
Rocket flowers are delicate and best used fresh. They can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2–3 days wrapped in a slightly damp paper towel and kept in an airtight container. Wash them only before use to prevent wilting, and keep them away from strong odors and excess moisture to maintain freshness.
